The book Movies in the Age of Obama has been published and includes Bob McParland's artcile on James Baldwin's writings and the films Django Unchained and Lincoln: "If Django and Lincoln Could Talk." 

Dickens and the Victorian Child - July 12, 2014

"Dickens and the Victorian Child," an essay in The Victorian by Bob McParland, is now available on the World Wide Web. You can also read "Dickens and Opera" in an online journal called "The Human." 'Google' the titles and the author's name and you will find the articles. Charles Dickens's American Audience is cited in Tiffany Eberle Kriner's new book (published July 1, 2014), The Future of the Word: An Eschatoloogy of Reading, Fortress Press and in Jonathan Daniel Wells, in "Charles Dickens and the Transatlantic Debate over Slavery" in Slavery and Abolition (May 2014).

Song for Peace Is Among Finalists in Ireland - July 10, 2014

Bob McParland will join a talented group of finalists with his song for peace, which is among the songs selected for this year's Tipperary Peace Convention activities on Thursday, July 10 in Tipperary Town, Ireland.

Music in American Life  has been published by ABC- CLIO/Greenwood. Bob McParland's article is the one on American Songwriters. The article offers a strong selection of notes on some of the most prominent songwriters in American life and history.

Bob McParland spoke on Van Morrison's Astral Weeks for a panel on Religion and Rock at the American Popular Culture Conference in Chicago.

Hallelujah Effect Review Published - March 22, 2014

A review of The Hallelujah Effect by Babette Babich, on covers of Leonard Cohen's song- and many other things- is now available online via Taylor and Francis. This will appear in a future publication.

Rock Music Studies - A New Journal: Book Reviews - March 15, 2014

Bob McParland reviews books in the newly launched Rock Music Studies. There is a book on open mics  by sociologist Marcus Aldredge, Ashgate Publishing. Bob has also reviewed Melody Man, a book on the musical legacy of publisher/producer Joe Davis.  Look for Rock Music Studies, with essays by Deena Weinstein and Tom Kitts, early next year. A review of Knowing Jazz by Ken Prouty appears in Popular Music and Society.

The Beatles Anniversary Conference Announced - December 2, 2013

Bob McParland will present "Memory, Narrative, and The Beatles" at the international Beatles conference at Penn State University in February. The conference will celebrate the 1964 first visit of The Beatles to the United States and their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Film and Literary Modernism Published - April 9, 2013

Film and Literary Modernism, a book of essays on film, literature, and the modernist period, edited by Bob McParland, has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing and is now available. The book includes the work of filmmakers, film scholars, and writers from across the United States and Canada as well as from Israel, Turkey, Scandinavia, and Great Britain.


Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young- "Politics and Social Justice On a Four Way Street" Popular Culture Presentation in Washington, D.C. in March 2013 - March 20, 2013

Bob McParland presented a paper in Washington, D.C. on Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and the socio-political legacy of the 1960s and 1970s. The panel was led by Canadian scholar Nick Baxter-Moore, who spoke on John Mellencamp and it included David Wright and Colin Lieberg. Also at the American Popular Culture Conference, the new book Finding Fogerty was discussed by a panel led by editor Thomas Kitts, with Lawrence Pitilli, Jake Sudderth, Stephen Miller. Colin Helb, Alex Di Blasi, and Mark Bernard provided an insightful look back at the pop group The Monkees. (None of those speakers were born until after the height of the Monkees' career.)

Bob McParland (guitar/vocal) and Mike Baron (drums and percussion) performed to an enthusiastic audience in Wyckoff, New Jersey, Saturday, March 2 at CS Barn, on the premises of the Faith Community Reformed Church at 530 Sicomac Avenue.

Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young and Social Justice to be Discussed in Washington, D.C. in March 2013 - November 28, 2012

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and their social and political "voice" will be the subject of Bob McParland's talk at the American Popular Culture conference in Washington, D.C. at the end of March 2013. Individually and collectively, these musicians have embraced a variety of social justice issues. There are few better places to consider the attention of CSNY to these concerns than in the nation's capitol.

Bob McParland's essay "A Generation Lost in Space" appears in Do You Believe in Rock and Roll?- Don McLean's American Pie, edited by Raymond Schuck Sr. and Raymond Schuck, Jr. , Jefferson, N.C.: McFarland Publishing, 2012. The collection is an anniversary tribute to Don McLean's work. Bob McParland's essay reflects upon the cultural moment of "the Sixties" and McLean's song. The book has been published.

Film and Literary Modernism Book Planned - May 20, 2012

A contract has been signed for a book with a UK publisher on Film and Literary Modernism. This will be a collection edited by Bob McParland, with the contributions from more than twenty film scholars and essayists.
